After sleeping well I rose before six put on the coffee finished my morning ministrations wrote a draft of what may be my next Reader column then finished another chapter to get past the halfway mark on Atkinson’s second volume. God it’s a great book. Several chuckles on another hero sent to the US from France by Ben Franklin who has just been joined by John Adams on the US delegation.
John Paul Jones who has just begun to fight has taken a ship and crew directly to England after France has recognized the United States. That is not a declaration of war against Britain. But France, full of British spies including one helping Franklin, has been racing to build a fleet that can be a match for the English will soon me shadowing the Brits in hopes of getting them to start a war.
Jones playing the part of a free-booter lands on his old home ground ready to burn down much of the British coaling industry only to discover his crew making merry in a bar and getting drunk. Disgusted he takes some sober sailors with him to kidnap an aristocrat to ransom some jailed American sailors. When the Lady of the house explains that her husband is taking the waters the sailors want to trash the house and loot it. Jones asks for the house silver to avoid mayhem and when he gets back to France to sell it to give the sailors some booty personally buys it at auction pays them and returns it to the good lady.
That kind of gentility puts our Nobel coveting President to shame.
I’m about to add more to my next Reader column which I will direct my readers to read her on the blog. But before that I want to mention several stories from the Washington Post that I presume my readers will not be able to read without a subscription.
They are these:
About Trump pushing states to make it hard for Democrats to vote in the Midterms. Its longer. I plan to read it later.
The 104-year-old Democrat was honored by Lincoln and the press when he cast the vote for an election Lincoln had feared would go against him but planned to take like a man unlike our malignant Mafia Don. Its a guest column by a man who has a blog: What Would Lincoln Do?
I will note a column that describes Trump’s first term success in fighting Global Climate change that is rushing to bring small nuclear generators into production. And one more about a Democrat not supported by the national machinery who got elected in a Trump district in Washington state by not being a clone of the Democrats. She pushed a right to repair bill which farmers appreciate as an example of how to make the lives of some Trump voters better. I do think one of the things making it hard on Dems is the dogmatic views like stopping all Nuclear power generation which always struck me as helpful as long as we don’t put them on coastlines and fissures in the earth susceptible to Earthquakes and Tsunamis. Of Course Drill baby Drill Trump has done so much more damage this doesn’t make up for it. Mara Lago will be twenty feet under after he melts Greenland for its gold ore and lapping the Washington Monument and his new ballroom.
Oh, and a friend sent me a link to one of the announced candidate running against Pete Stauber. Cyle Cramer. Sounds like a very nice guy. I’m looking forward to meeting him at 6:30 at the Denfeld Auditorium’s candidate meet up.
