Its late and I have another ten or fifteen pages to finish a chapter in my book reading routine. I’ve not made reading a chapter a day in a book part of any previous resolutions. But this year with the fate of the Day in the balance…..which by the way is the book I’m reading at the moment I think the balance of this year. Until the election I should aim for a chapter a day in the half dozen books I want to read before this year is out. Fate of the Day is the Second book in a trilogy that Rick Atkinson is writing about the Revolutionary War. I’m almost a third done with it having started it about a week ago. Like the first volume which Claudia and I listened to on audible on the way to Arizona in November its magnificent. And reading about a nation divided is sobering as Donald Trump increases the power of his secret, heavily masked Ice police now being protected by the FBI which he has emptied of anyone he doesn’t like.
So, each day, weekends included I
1. try to spend an hour or two on French. Today I spent that time with a group of French speakers who meet three blocks away every other Saturday at…….
2. read a bit of a history book
3. Read the NYTimes, Washington Post, NPR which usually takes two hours.
4. and lately try to write something – A post – A column for the Duluth Reader – A passage that might fit into a book.
5. If my current status as a candidate finds supporters I will be tested on this routine but my eleven years of playing Paul Revere about his affects on America can’t be set aside now. I have some strengths that could finally be supported with people and I quietly joined them today with Claudia although they don’t for the most part know I hope to enlist them in a well thought out organization to be rid of Donald Trump’s pork rind Pete Stauber.
I brought my Lincoln sign today which seemed too nice to fit my rage. Nontheless, I did my best two wear Renee Good’s smile in the cold for an hour and a half.

I had already spent an hour writing an outline expressing my outrage at hearing four bullets put into the smiling women who’s friendly last words were : “That’s find dude, I’m not mad at you….” I understand that Trump supporters who have watched this see good reason for shooting her. Hell, one of them put it on the Internet like the Navy blasting a power boat in the Caribbean with a missile.
Before my wife and I decided to watch a sobering movie called Will about a Dutch policeman in 1942 having to police the SS run nation I got a wonderful door bell ring. I hope I keep S in my mind tonight than the terrible compromises the Dutch cop had to face.
S told me she was 6 and three-quarters years old. We invited S and her mother in and I asked if it was her grandmother who had brought her. It was clearly her mother. S had written a note to me and made me a snowman. I thanked her and told her that her name was the same as my French pen pal…….who I call “Adelaide” in my posts that mention our correspondence. Her mother asked if we could take a picture and Claudia suggested we pose in front of the fireplace. When we were done I told our guests to wait for just a minute as I had something for S. I gave her one of my remaining packs of snow sculpture trading cards. Claudia explained that the one with the little boy was the first one I made. It was my three year old son now a 41 and three-quarters grownup with two little girls of his own. This is what we exchanged.
