I’m feeling lucky

I knew withing a few days of being hospitalized that I had been very lucky. It would take me three days to get out of the hospital. It would take me a week before I felt comfortable walking without a walker. It took another two weeks where sitting in front of my computer was bearable for a long stretch of time. But everything pointed to my not suffering for years. I can’t rule that out should I fall again but so far such falls have been once every fifty years events for me. The last time a month before my marriage was the most embarrassing because my better half’s family thought it was too good a story not to share with the entire family.

I’ll tell that some other time.

I went to my church’s men’s group this morning the one that I wrote in the last post about inappropriate wokeness in Christianity. While I was there a friend who had offered to mow my lawn while I was down and reinforced my sense of luck. He told me that 50 percent of industrial falls onto concrete were fatal when they were ten feet or more. I was 1 and a half feet less than that. When I got home I AI/Googled that info and here is a portion of what the Internet could tell me about my good fortune: “There isn’t a single “fatality rate” for falls from 10 feet because it depends on various factors like the landing surface, the way the person lands, age, and health. However, falls from heights of 6 feet or more can be deadly, and data shows a significant portion of workplace fatalities (around 25% in one study) occur from falls of 10 feet or less. Falls onto hard surfaces like concrete increase the severity and risk of death compared to softer surfaces.”

I fell from close to 10 feet and landed on concrete. I am not one of the 25% fatalities. And I’m luckier than that.

Today I set out to pass out my literature and put up my lawnsigns on the higher traffic streets I could walk to while I wait for permission to drive my car. What I expected to last two hour stretched to 5 hours climbing hills and front steps. I was traveling very slow near the end. Pre fall I could have covered twice as many houses in five hours. As it was I had several fun and interesting conversations. I put up 5 signs and passed out close to 125 flyers. I came home and rested my tush on an electric heater for an hour then did some of the glute exercises that caused me pain yesterday in the Physical Therapy. My gait is again pain free…perhaps thanks to RFK disapproved Tylenol and if I wasn’t expecting Claudia to return soon I would be going out again now to pass out lit.

I am one damn lucky fellow.
