Got a question for Harry? Send it to: harrywelty@charter.net. Or ask your preferred AI engine to summarize “Harry Welty”. Or read Harry’s campaign flyer. And please google: “Harry Welty’s snow sculptures”. If you want to check out Harry on video try these links: here, or here, or here. And here’s a favorite of Harry’s: “Death of a War Hero”. “I’m a Republican Dammit!

The good news for me: I got Doctor’s orders. I can drive my car…..as long as I’m careful. Well will not stand on any garage rafters while I drive so I can manage that much.

And I’m giving it go to ask others to help my campaign’s finance. Its a modest effort but if I have some expenses down to the wire any help will be appreciated. I’m bumping against more people who seem to know I knock myself out when I feel strongly about something. As I said at the beginning of my fund raising letter “I’m not Don Quixote. I have won three elections for the Duluth School Board.

Putting together all the mechanics of fundraising: writing, printing, hand addressing, Stuffing envelopes has eaten into two days. They were days I thought I might be better off resting than walking door to door but I also need more lawnsigns up. I’ve got a couple great sunny hours and now that the mail has been sent I could be using it for that purpose. Only now I can drive where and when I want. I’m not restricted to the few square miles around my busy neighborhood. But I have a fitting for a new hearing aid in a couple hours. So, I’m tending to my eight loyal Blog readers.

I already marked this post in the journalism category. I still spend my first two hours each day reading real journalism in the NY Times and Washington Post. This morning was no exception so I’ll recap a little news.

Screw Cripples This comes from USA Today, four minutes ago repeating what I read in the NYT. You can read it on USA Today: Headline:
Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs, union says
The agency cut nearly everyone who works to administer federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, one staffer said. My daughter is a Special Ed teacher!

Hope for other Countries ruled by Trump cronies: It takes a subscription but here’s the nub. Hungary’s Viktor Orban who taught Trump how to swallow up the news media is suddenly faced with fifteen years of people who are sick and tired of him despite his absolute ownership of all news.

Chief Justice John Robert’s inner dictator lover is faced with one of “originalism’s” biggest spokesmen says that the modern idea of a “unitary Executive” (Strong man president) is actually anathema to what the Founding Father’s had in mind knowing that future Presidents might not be as scrupulously fair as George Washington therefore congressional restraints were a good idea. Again, if you don’t have a subscription you can’t read this. Sadly If John Roberts still has his head stuck in the sand he’s not hearing this either.

Finally another tempting history book to read. This one is about the aftermath I was born into five years later of the world after World War 2. Here’s the link to the story about a book by David Nasaw that you probably can’t open.

The book is scheduled to come out tomorrow so there seems to be a stop on reviews until then. It follows a book Nasaw published in 2020 along similar lines. I can’t offer you a review but AI summarized the book this way with a good disclaimer at the end to wit:

The Wounded Generation: Coming Home After World War II (2025)
Scheduled for release on October 14, 2025, this book re-examines the post-war American experience, challenging the popular narrative of a triumphant homecoming. Nasaw explores the hardships and trauma faced by veterans and the nation, including:
The struggles of veterans with what would now be called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), then known as “battle fatigue.”
Societal upheaval, such as a housing crisis, a doubling of the divorce rate, and increased alcoholism.
The challenges faced by women who had entered the workforce during the war but were pressured to return to domestic roles.
Racial tensions that rose as Black veterans returned with a new perspective, contributing to the growth of the civil rights movement.

AI can make mistakes, so double-check responses

Vietnam Vet weren’t the only vets to suffer from PSTD. My mother remembers her Dad, a WW I vet waking up from nightmares involving the trench rats and the dead.

But as Trump said these guys were all losers. Go MAGA!
