I could have watched the forth GOP debate on economics. Instead I watched Rebel without a Cause on The Movie Channel. I’m not sure if I would have found the debate as ridiculous and overwrought as the classic James Dean film.
I might have seen the flick in full forty years ago. I’ve certainly seen several clips on numerous occasions. It reminded me of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye. I couldn’t identify with all the angst and the parents of the young rebels made sitcom parents look sage and cool.
I did get Andrew Sullivan’s take by reading his “live blogging” of the debate after the fact. He seems to think that Herman Cain was the winner tonight. If so, Herman may indeed be the biggest surprise of 2012. I think he’s been incredibly simple minded but that seems to work with a lot of the GOP’s kind of voters. It hasn’t worked for Mitt Romney yet though. I guess the GOP Hoi polloi draws the line at either Mormonism or speaking with forked tongue. Maybe both.
