That’s almost as catchy as “Yes we can.”
So here’s Iowa’s latest Republican poll.
I’ve previously described Cain as a Republican crucifix to ward off accusations of racism. Its also effective at warding off Mormons.
Others have described Herman as a “placeholder” for Republicans as they await a better candidate. Its looking increasingly unlikely that they will find a better candidate now. So, do the antimisceginistic feelings of a lot of Mississipi Republicans prove that the GOP is now a modern day KKK? I don’t think so.
I do think that pundits like Rush Limbaugh talked up Obama in 2008 to shame Democrats into nominating a fellow Rush thought couldn’t get past the voter’s racism. Had Bush II not been such an unmitigated disaster that might have come to pass. Now Republicans are stuck trying to figure out how to attack a man who has bent over backward to work with them. Dragging their heals on stimulating the American economy seems to be their best strategy.
So what’s different now? Not long ago Colin Powell, a very compelling potential black GOP candidate, gave up the idea of running for the Presidency very early on. I suspect he felt his race would get in the way. Why not now?
Its a whole new ball game. Nominating Herman Cain would 1. cover the GOP against charges of racism, 2. Give them an excuse for having lost should he fail to defeat Obama. (they should have known better than nominate a black guy), 3. Excuse them from having to mess with any more black candidates when they have a real good chance to win, 4. Give them a candidate who’s lots of fun, 5. Give them a black candidate who’s back story would be very appealing to black voters. (Herman’s a real descendant of slaves)
Racism in America today is barely a pale shadow of what it was in the past. True, African Americans haven’t built up much ownership in America’s wealth because each black generation was systematically short changed for 300 years. But if the Republicans want to keep millionaires on an uneven playing field who better to argue to keep it tipped in their favor than a black guy who sounds like a black guy is supposed to sound? And there’s a bonus point – if they nominate a black guy how can Mitt Romney and Utah blame them for being prejudiced?
