Last Post: I pledge to God to cheat like Hell

The last post served as my first crack at a suitable post to submit my next Duluth Reader column. It was the first of four cracks each a new beginning until on my fourth crack I liked the summation of three months of no columns ended by my absolute disgust with people who call themselves Christians pledging with a President too clueless to know he’s been on Satan’s side to “cheat like hell.” Well now its their words since they all swore to Donald Trump’s words. I haven’t heard back from the Reader’s editor who no doubt has wondered why I stopped writing column for three months. I hope he got it and the rough draft of my proposed 4×8 sign. The professionals have improved on it and I can’t wait to put it up on Friday, I hope, with the final Reader column announcing it.
Since I put up my library, which is mentioned in the column, I’ve been primping it and changing small details. The last two days I’ve been touching up the little stick latch which I hurried and used permanant markers to color by hand doing a dastardly messy job of it. I am putting new red and white stripes on it now with thin slices of painter’s tape to make them straight with a vivid acrylic paint.
Making sure the box was water tight has been a priority. I sealed corners with caulk and repainted it. I added an extension of plexi glass to go beyond one door to create a full closure with the opposite door to cover a quarter inch gap that invited rain. In fact there were two serious rain falls before I managed this. On one occassion on of the children’s books got a little wet on the third rain I found a very damp book. However, it was a paperback someone else put in. My first trade. I’ve had about five books taken out in two weeks but it was the first gap that I didn’t have to fill. I can only guess it was put in on a rainy day and the giver didn’t realize quite how wet it was. I spent two days trying to dry it so that I could put it back. Its rumpled but it will go back.
I also visited three Goodwill stores to add to the books as they are removed. I will start rotating the books once or twice a week so that anyone who visits will keep finding new books peak at. Yesterday I put the flyer that I’ve been inserting in books in a water proof clear folder and attached it to the posts so anyone stopping by can read it if they want. Today I put up a hook to hang up a folding lawn chair for anyone wanting to read a ways into a book before taking it home.
Over the past week drivers have often seen the doors swung open with so many clamps on them they look like hedgehogs. I’ve been working to make sure they seal tight to winter proof them.
