Blogging down sans electioneering

Having just experienced the first week of summer in an election year without becoming a candidate my motivation for blogging daily has plummeted. I’ve spend time working on my garden patio and bought stain to brighten up my outdoors fencing but blogging. I’ve spent that time reading history. Last month was pretty modest reading but within a week of startingJune I finihsed the Patriarch. Very satisfying reading. I have a new appreciation for Joe Kennedy’s family and better understand how the men in his family, like their father, had a lot of amours or, opportunity for daliances. Joe had a purposely clueless spouse. There was no bras buring back then.

I have only just touched a new book that was mailed her a couple days ago as we wait for the Postal Service to stop mail in balloting in the fall. That book is Freedom Around the Globe which sends me back to the Revolutionary Era I started the year reading about. I’ve only touched the prologue which has a particularly nice page describing how boring the Declaration of Independence is for students.

Last night I found myself looking through the index of a fat book I bought twenty years ago about DW Griffith who made the first mega hit movie Birth of a Nation. I was looking for information about the 1915 New York City opening and the story that Woodrow Wilson saw the movie shortly beforhand in the White House. It took place but something I had read recently was verified. Wilson did not offer a tribute to its history of Reconstruction although he believed the Southern myths of blacks persecuting whites. However he said enough for Griffith a salesman to promote the movie and drum up interest. Although the movie looked quaint to me in my youth when I saw glimpses of it in documentaries it was a revelation like Star Wars in my lifetime. Time marches on and George Lucas has had to add lots of digital fireworks to his 1976 blockbuster to keep audiences from disappointment. For Griffith very little highbrow approval was needed to sell out theaters as never before.

I started that last paragraph two hours ago and stopped not intending to garden but garden I did in our garden. I spent that time relocating a large piece of driftwood and digging up stray flowers to put back where they strayed from. We have a modest backyard home improvement planned for July. We are going to replace a warped back walkway and steps down to our patio. It will come with a stairwell to protect us and our visitors from tumbling down.

Last night after I scoured half our patio to remove stray weeds between its bricks Claudia asked for me to put some yellow tape on a loose paver in the steps. If I was going to put an X on it I wanted the message to be clear.
