This will be a short placeholder until I get back from the Damiano Center
For years I’ve thought back to the first movie I saw with an actor who went by a single name “Topal.” I looked it up last night. I thought it was an old black and white from the fifties but it was from the year I graduated from highschool 1969 Before Winter Comes. The movie was about a refugee camp following the Second World War and the desperation of its occupants not to be sent to Russian camps.
I’m not sure when I bought the Bitter Road to Freedom but it was probably over 15 years ago. In the years since I’ve read reviews of other books on the same subject leading me to wonder if I might have found a better book. The printed page about the Last Million is one such book and the post-it note on the book Savage Continent was another I heard about and so stuck the title in the front page.
The Truman Book has just taken me to the millions of displaced people and the mayhem in the war’s aftermath that the Soviets were happy to see because they counted on nations falling like plumbs to add to their empire. That is what Harry Truman and General George Marshall prevented with the Marshall Plan and our generous funding to get England and France on their feet again.
I’ve mentioned that after I get through Truman I intend to read one of my books on Eisenhower who succeeded Harry Truman to the presidency. I just noticed that the book I plan to read is authored by the book Bitter Road… I believe the later was nominated for a Pulitzer so it is exactly the kind of scholarship that appeals to me. But each of these three and four others ChatGPT suggested has a slightly different focus and or time period.
I plan on using this year to read more of the heavy weight books I’ve bought over the last thirty years. I’ve found AI programs excelent for comparing and contrasting such books. In fact I’ve begun feeding my writing into Chat to analyze my work. Asking it to immitate me didn’t work after only a few entries but I intend to feed over 300 columns I’ve previously written into it for it to disect. Even after I feed it that much I doubt I’ll be satisfied using it to mimic my voice. It will be a challenge to see.
