I broke my back for our children and our Democracy

I am willing myself not to give up fights I have always thought I would rise to the occasion to fight. After the third fitbit judged wonderful night’s sleep in a row the very sore right leg joint I’m suffering from seems warranted. I slept seven and a half largely uninterrupted hours. Long, long time readers know I’ve been fighting to sleep since my Red Plan fight between 2006 and 2010. The word “sleep” can be found in over 400 posts. I was even taking a college student’s studying drug classified as verboten by the DEA and as an amphetamine at the time to make sure my lack of sleep didn’t plunge me into dementia a malady my Mother suffered from for the last decade of her life. I can’t recall the name it was sold under illicitly on the Internet but some of it was fake so I had to be careful when I ordered it from sources in the pharmaceutical industry in India.

I’ll confess that a regimen of mostly over the counter pain meds Tylenol and Ibuprofen have helped me sleep through pain but there has been very little of that at night for several days. But pushing myself to walk is a major preoccupation. I almost fell once in the hospital and when Claudia ratted me out the Physical Therapy staff went into overdrive keeping me on a short leash. That’s when the night nurses were alerted to set up my bed with an alarm in case I got out of bed……and it went off when I tried to pee in a plastic jar so that one of the night nurses rushed in and turned on the light sure I had fallen and couldn’t get up. Bashful kidneys ensued and I had only myself to blame.

So, this morning I followed yesterdays mile long walk down fifth street and back on fourth. I expected to make it a little shorter trip and sure enough it was ten not twelve blocks long. Also my right joint let me know I have a long way to go before I am healed.

The photo above is from yesterday’s long hike. Halloween beckons. I sang yesterday but today I put in my bluetooth earphones and listened to Radio France. I tried to tune out my thoughts but early one the title of this post interrupted my listening. It is technically correct. I broke three tiny wings on three vertebrae that will grow back onto my spine. I decided I should send out a fundraising letter and lead with that line. I would like to spend more money on my campaign than I’m willing to spend myself but I know my own limits. One ad in the reader and 2000 leaflets. That’s a modest campaign and, of course, a couple lawnsigns.

And I should add it wasn’t just my back I broke in my 8.5 foot fall. I broke my hip right where I bend thus my crippled walk. When I head to my nieces wedding in Arizona in mid November I do not expect to be limping. I will, however, keep limping for our children’s education and our democracy.
