Tweeting, TikTocking and AI cheats, all to the tune of “conservative” bleats

Harry is an information omnivore. Over 19 years he written about every topic on the list to the right. For more, use this blog’s search function (upper right). Or google “Harry Welty’s snow sculptures”.

Mrs. Kirk’s forgiveness of her husband’s assassin and Donald Trump’s hatred show that only one of them is worthy of the worship some Christians shower on the latter.

After I heard of Charlie Kirk’s assassination I managed to avoid viewing the bloody scenes. I don’t watch slasher movies either. The comment I recall that set the scene was a commentator mentioning how Mr. Kirk took the recent South Park episode in stride. Charlie had seen it said he thought it was great. I have to commend Kirk who has a much thicker skin than Donald Trump.

So, we get to the rally Trump organized in Arizona to honor the young father and founder of Turning Points USA.

What are we to make of Mrs. Kirk saying she forgave her husband’s murderer. I heard a large part of the Arena audience cheer her. I took heart. Then I heard the ugly hateful words of the President calling for vengeance. They too received a massive cheer.

My beef with the Republican party is this. No Republican is allowed to disagree with the President. It is a cult and yet the Kirks suggest how deep the divisions of what passes for conservativism are. How can people who spend their time on TikTok or reading sarcastic tweets be challenged to return to the world of long literate and thoughtful explorations of life. Even the snappy parables of Jesus are wrapped up in contextual passages that give them meaning. I love many of the things he said and perhaps my favorite is: “be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” There is great irony in Donald Trump’s favorite Civil Rights pop song. “The Snake.”

In Trump’s comments at the Kirk memorial I only heard his hiss.

I’ll stop here after mentioning that this post’s title, which I haven’t fully addressed, has roughly the same rhythm and meter as the 1907 song in the era of literacy, “School Days.” That song begins: “Reading and writing and rithmatic, all to the tune of a hickory Stick.” I’ll have more to say about that later.
