getting out of town

I am in Aurora, Colorado, visiting family. Monday and Tuesday I was fighting to stay awake through the first 25 hours of an audible of a Nobel winner about native American history. I’ve been on a long tear of crumby night sleeps. My wife has the ability to get behind the wheel and drive nonstop which seems to be a family trait. When I’m awake I can’t tear myself away from the history but my eyes will betray me as I slump over. I think I caught 80 percent of the narration. It has filled in gaps in the five or six book on native America I read or audibled over the last few years.

In addition I’ve been reading histories. Most recent I’ve devoured five or six of the first chapters to Ron Chernow’s Hamilton best known from the recent all black cast rap musical of the same name. It is a fabulous book. Its been waiting on my bookshelves for me for probably 20 years.

I will have difficulty staying up tonight to write my next Reader column. I’m chilling with family. Today Claudia and I went to a great public library in Cherry Creek and between reading books to my granddaughter I stopped and bought three used library books for a song. One was about the sad history of Abe Lincoln’s family through the end of the twentieth Century. One is a book of insights on what makes for popular movies. I have a grandson who might find it interesting. And I saw a book by a talking head for Fox television which in its first pages as a critique of “liberal journalism” is proving to be a screed justifying the pandering of Fox news for ever anti-American sentiment embraced by the iniquitous, lying Donald Trump.
