I have a day of cleaning up my papers ahead of me. This will be a long post that could be a draft for some future book about why we Americans are as addled politically as we are. It deserves to get a day’s attention. Instead it will be subject to the truths I spell out in the previous unproofread post. You can read that by clicking above “Last post.”
If I don’t get around to doing anymore with this post you can read a related post on Harper Lee’s masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird that I wrote here. (Now I’m going to have to spend ten minutes searching for a link to it) Ah here it is…..(I wrote this in advance of actually finding it. HOT DAMN. I’ve written about that book at least eleven, now twelve, times. And the post below about the book by Lee is good. The only thing I don’t spend time on is explaining how she changed what she wrote about her attorney Father from her first foray into her childhood to the second and nobel version, the myth, of To Kill a Mockingbird. In short, the father Atticus Finch in TKMB was not the racist her father was in real life.
Lee’s NY editor told her to write a book about the children in her first book. Lee took this to heart and while she was at it she added a gauzy, dreamy depiction of a father who honored justice unlike the real father who raised her. I still tear up when I hear the movie’s theme song.
This is a pretty good post about why not reading To Kill a Mockingbird won’t be the end of the world. I can tell that the gravity of the subject led me to proof read it. And the mention in it of my little neighbor who called black people the N word led to a Column on that subject in my Duluth Reader Column. Trust me I edited and proof read that column pretty carefully. You can read it here. I put that column in the book I’m selling on Amazon….
