Lincoln loving wide awakes should be prepared to fend of the waking dead, Lincoln hating, Trumpers.
As Abe said “you can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but not all the people all of the time. Donald Trump may have fooled himself but he hasn’t fooled me even after three nights straight of 90 minutes of sleeping doing my damndest to make a statement on his second inaugural. We got no Lincoln Second inaugural wit malice toward none. We got vintage Roy Cohn. (the movie link was the first thing that popped up in my google search. Not sure I’ve ever heard of it but I suspect the two hours watching it will be eye opening to anyone younger than a baby boomer. I was in gradeschool when he was exiled to New York City.)
From my last post the answer is, yes. My Trump cartoonhttps://lincolndemocrat.com/?p=35452 was put in the Reader, albeit, in the back pages among ads. I’ve once again missed the deadline to turn in a Reader Column. I’m bursting with things to say since my last column on the decency of people in Tennessee who surely were big Trump voters. I’ve been cramming then in my head since Trump’s win. I’ve read several books set some books aside to continue reading. Acquired more. I have plans for the next four years to continue aiming at being Donald Trump’s worst nightmare. Even the last four days I’ve turned to my one unchallenged Duluth talent of working on a snow sculpture. God gave me the perfect weather to make an homage to the Wizard of Oz to honor my Kansas roots and say nothing about politics.
My short declaration under the cartoon I cobbled together of a Calvin like Trump pissing on a forest firefighter stated I would never again put his image on my front yard. As the inaugural drew closer and the cold weather began turning to the coldest inaugural in 40 years Duluth became a very tough place to fuss around with a snow sculpture on a slippery hill. I hit on the perfect dig for Trump and dropped my promise, if that’s what it was, not to put his image on my front lawn. I told myself putting up a vinyl likeness of him wasn’t the same thing as contaminating my snow with it. So I did what I did for a decade or more on Halloween when our church organized safe trick or treats with our car trunks as candy dispensers. Like the time Claudia and I dressed up as characters from Oz.
This has my cell phone screen for a couple years along with the date I captured it for my Flickr Account.
(BTW I just spent 30 minutes scrolling through 60 of my nearly 300 Flickr pages to find it) It will be a big multi week job removing all the duplicates and ephemera.
thirty minutes has knocked me off the reverie which started this…My taking back my promise not to desecrate my front lawn.
I decided on a tableau as the weather turned bitter cold. I was disappointed with my characters from Oz but the time to resculpt them with heated snow disappeared despite nights waking at 3 to design flying monkeys out of vinyl, painting them and sticking them together to fly over the Emerald City. When I finally hung them up an hour after Trump became president it was such a cumbersome process on slippery hilltop with help still wearing their PJ’s on a blustery below zero day that my flying army got to tangled for me to straighten out with wind chills near 50 below without losing my fingers.
NOTE. I JUST SENT THIS NIGHT PHOTO TO FLICKR. IF YOU ARE READING THIS ITS BECAUSE IT WASN’T AVAILABLE TO BE ADDED YET AND I FORGOT TO PUT IT IN.
Last night I took a picture out of the window that shows how I set up a blanket behind a rainbow to be a blue sky for flying monkey silhouettes. I’ll sort them out when I won’t lose my fingers.
I woke up at five with the coldest temperatures on inside outside thermometer in a few years:
I held off taking this picture because it was still dropping and only one tenth of a degree below -23 even. Its now a quarter to 7 AM thanks to all that photo scrolling and it will likely be even colder now.
All is good with me if not the world. I have put in my first early morning post in ages. I have big plans – likely to be unrealizable but) which will give me another healthy shot of purpose and I will not be alone. I’ve been planning on a post about trusting democracy which will be about the French upending of democracy in Algeria twenty some years ago that shows how not to follow the Republican party’s path to disfunction and Elon Musks. I have books to read. Columns to write and I’d love to write a book in french to explain what the hell happened to the US from a Kansas boy’s perspective. Its ten to seven. Time to reheat my coffee.
