What does it mean?

Once again Brandon Stahl, the Trib’s City Council reporter, has peeked under the City Council covers to find a naked little school board issue. He reports on his blog BUZZ.Duluth the following:

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the council needing to approve permits/variances before the school district could proceed with its new, um, stadium/athletic field/large-patch-of-grass-and-bleachers-that-will-play-host-to-frollicking-children (what it will actually be seems to depend on who you ask).

At any rate, it was to go before the council last week, but it was tabled at the request of councilor Jim Stauber, who wanted more information on the proposal. That happened last week in the form of committee meetings and it was to be voted on this Monday. But during an agenda session last night, Stauber again asked that it be tabled for another two weeks — and he got support from the council.

So why table it? The election.

“It may give councilors a clear indication of how voters feel about that site,” he said. “Councilors may choose to grant or deny the appeal [based on the election results].”

In other words: if voters sweep away the school district incumbents, then that’s a signal that they don’t want the stadium. Keep the incumbents, and they want the stadium. Offer a mixed bag like two years ago (when Gary Glass got in, but Harry Welty did not) and … well I don’t know what that means.

Brandon’s post reminds me how much I want to replace the Jim Stauber lawnsign that was stolen from my front yard a couple weeks ago.
