Collapse?

I had coffee with a new recruit this morning. He had attended the last school board meeting and been unimpressed with the actions of the Board.

He told me his child at Denfeld came home with some troubling news from one of her teachers. The word is that 54% of the students at Denfeld are failing at least one subject. I heard a similar tale about the 9th graders at East High recently although the percentage from East escapes me.

This father wondered if by passing this information on to students timid teachers were attempting to send out for help that would be veiled enough to protect them from retaliation. From Dr. Dixon’s Administration? Goodness. What a thought.

On the rare occasions I see active school employees of the District I joke that they better not be seen with me. They always smile at this. As for retirees. I’ve met quite a few who just shake their heads.

After serving on the School Board for eight years I came to the conclusion that the only things a school board could really do was promote fiscal responsibility and administrative stability. Without either of these a School District will spin out of control. Our current school board seems oblivious to either of these guideposts.
