Collateral damage

Community Action Duluth weighs in on rental prices asking that the State not repeal the “renters credit” which helps the poor keep their housing costs down. In a letter-to-the-editor today CAP’s Board of Directors accuses the state of balancing its the budget on the backs of the poor. Of course, the same could be said for the building of the Red Plan. I didn’t hear any of the CAP leadership weigh in when Rep. Mike Jaros complained that the Red Plan was being financed on a regressive tax. I didn’t hear them complain when the school portion of property taxes jumped 56% from 2007 to 2008. I did talk to some landlords who had no choice but to raise their rents.

“We need to stop asking our most vulnerable Minnesotans to bear so much of the cost of balancing the state’s budget. The proposed cuts would harm Minnesotans across the state, including seniors, people with disabilities, and those with low and moderate incomes.”

Among the letter signers was a school board member, Laura Condon.
