Kent Worley sent me his latest thoughts on the Red Plan. I agree with him and I’ll encourage him to send it to the Tribune.
Duluth Can Not Really Let This Happen
Probably 60 million dollars! THAT is what it would take to begin to replace what the Public School District now owns up at Central High School. This adds a big dollar value to the preeminence of the Central High School site. The further loss of the Secondary Technical Center adjacent to the high school, will be another expensive loss to the taxpayers!
It’s time to understand why the decision to abandon Central in favor of the Ordean site, only 1/3 its size, and without adequate recreational/athletic facilities, and without the potential to ever have them, was made. We can trace this decision to Mr. Dixon’s carefully hand picked Long Range Facilities Planning committee. While the decision had already been made prior to the choice of the names, the citizens chosen were known to be in favor of this short-sighted decision. Exactly why they decided to eliminate the best property and facility the District owns, has never really been revealed!
I hope people realize these larger context costs – not only the monetary costs, but how the leaders gave up this unique opportunity to unite east and west while solving the longstanding problem of inequality. That is the greatest negative cost to this city, along with the cost of not letting kids grow up getting to know a mixed and integrated society. Lost opportunities multiply increasing the loss.
The only word to describe this is disgraceful.
