Next year will be even worse

for the Duluth Schools:

increasing the student to staff ratio by another 0.92, a move that would mean about 12 teacher layoffs and likely two to five more students in many classes, was less painful than eliminating all 18 music, art and physical education specialists funded through the general fund in the district’s elementary schools.

This will mean that some classes with 40 students will have an average increase to 41 students. Some classes of 40 would go up even higher to 42 or more.

The article does not say if the District is planning to spend its dwindling reserve fund. Its funny how having a gun to their head suddenly has Red Plan lovers on the Board talking about trimming insurance costs. They gave that away big time over the past couple years to help Dr. Dixon keep the teachers -union from going berserk. If, as Judy Seliga-Punyko says, teachers are seriously talking about giving it up that is an incredible sign of desperation. Judy is in for almost four more miserable years like this.
