Welty for Congress angst

I haven’t just been working on my book for the past few blog light days. I’ve also been anguishing about making light of not telling Claudia about my blog’s recent content. That came to a head on Friday when I got a cell phone call from one of the advertising folks at the UMD Statesmen. We were about to have lunch at the Olive Garden. (I love the soup and salad special) and Claudia could tell something was up. Not very clever of me to bring my cell phone or answer it.

After her eyes narrowed and she asked me what I was up to she begged me not to advertise the damn book and take preorders. I’d done this once before and then returned all the money when I changed my mind about writing it. She pointed out that if I croaked she’d have to figure out what the hell I’d just done. I had to concede the validity of her point but since like all young and foolish people I find the idea of my dying any time soon preposterous her concern struck me as almost as fantastic as my Congressional fantasy.

I have not yet confided that I’m toying with the idea of running for Congress let alone that I’ve posted a video of myself joshing about the possibility. Dammit. I hate being so duplicitous even if its all in fun. I guess that’s because to me – I’m dead serious. If I do start selling pre-orders (notwithstanding my wife’s objections) and get a couple thousand orders it will be very easy to persuade myself that I’m just what the doctor ordered. A couple thousand sales would give me a lot of money to start a campaign. If the reviews were good it could lead to a lot more money.

If it was all my money then I could spend it as I wished without worrying about being compromised with campaign contributions. It would also feel a lot cleaner than spending money earned from raiding pension plans of a newly acquired company prior to shutting it down in the name of efficiency to conceal the greed.
