Today’s headlines explain that Trump is bored with the pile of shit he dumped in the Straights of Hormuz. If that was the worst thing he’s doing in the news we should be happy. After all he singlehandely encouraged Iran to build Nuclear Weapons when he killed the treaty to reign in Global Warming. Whether farmers faced with both drying landscapes and killing oil and pesticide prices, thanks to Trump, find it boring or not I don’t know. They have only themselves to blame. They helped return a tantrum throwing child to the Oval Office.
A worse story is the expansion of Trump’s mania for destroying evidence and science his dimmest supporters wish to supress. Whether its evidence of Epstein’s handiwork, government record keeping or proof of his attempt to overthrow the 2020 election its all of a piece. But he wants to keep the world ignorant of the best evidence of global warming by heart monitors off a cardiac patient. In this case its removing hundreds of deep sea monitors from the oceans that America planted to measure the sun’s heating up our oceans. Ignorance is an ocean of piss.
Meanwhile, Republicans ended their Minnesota State convention by having for a minute of silence to pray for a jailed murderer who strangled a black man with the public watching.
I was busy but torn last month between promoting or stepping away from a fifth challenge of our chucklehead, traitor Congressman, Pete Stauber. My last chance to drive to St. Paul and register ends at 5pm today. I’m not going anywhere so my 250th American Birthday reading challenge will pick up again. The end of May brought me within 200 pages of finishing the middle book below, The patriarch.
For this post I took a photo of five of the books I’m eager to read or finish. Missing is a book about the first president who served two non consecutive terms Grover Cleveland. I’ll probably order a book authored by Brodsky based on what I’ve read. He falls short of a Caro or Cherno but I want to understand this era of bitter partisan politics better. There are other subjects that beckon.
From Left to right here’s what I want to better understand:
The Field of Blood: I’ve sat on this book for a decade. Its a listing of perhaps a dozen fistfights and worse between pro and anti-slave congressmen. It culminated in my home state of Kansas after the passage of the Kansas Nebraska Act. The Grover Cleveland era after the bitterness of the war also resembles today. The fear of socialism got its start and is being revived today despite Ron Reagan’s spending Russia into the ground and the Chinese Commies leaning how to out Capitalist America.
Freedom Round the Globe This is a celebration of the fruits of our American revolution I just saw eulogized in the NYTimes. Its about how the echoes of our revolution expanded through the world after the birth of the United States. BTW. Slave owners tended not to be all that thrilled by those echoes. Mexico and the Latin revolutionaries that followed did What Thomas Jefferson didn’t. They banned slavery. Mexico’s overlooking new immigrans from the American South who became Mexicans ignored the slaves they brought for too long until Texas rebelled became an independent slave owning nation. BTW I have a book about Sam Huston that is also hoping to squeeze into my reading before the year is over.
The Patriarch is proving to be as interesting as Gwen Ifell said. I’ve just gotten past the Second World War and Jack Kennedy is coming into view. When he bested Richard Nixon in 1960 America was close to its least partisan temper ever. The primary glitch was again the mistreatment of black Americans who did not get their votes until Kennedy’s assassination gave Lynden Johnson the enviormnent to pass the voting rights laws before Republicans were contaminated by too much Southern racism….That’s been undone. Now Republicans pray for white men who murder black men at Republican conventions.
The Prize Another book I’ve had for ages this one is about Middle Eastern Oil and Americans part in developing it to keep western economies growing through the Cold War. Its Author Daniel Yergin is still frequently consulted on news shows. A month ago he was saying what’s happening now is the biggest energy disruption ever. I expect the book will tell me a lot about FDR, Truman and Eisenhower.
Dark Money I got half way through this recent history of the billionares who are, like Joe P. Kennedy tampering with our democracy to preserve their immense wealth.
