Three times this morning I attempted to write a note to Karl Schuettler after reading his “Patient Cycle” blog post about a day in Budapest as Victor Orban was being dislodged as the thorn he was for free Europe. Three glitches were one too many so I’m sending him the URL for this post as my alternative way to comment on his post.

Gentle patient ironist,

Having become ancient and not crossing your path for a couple decades I couldn’t recall your name when I opened your Cycle this morning. I thought your commentary on Orban’s Budapest was worthy of some acknowledgement and decided to proceed with one despite my forgetfulness. It reminded me that Jana Hollingsworth once told me that she thought you were one of the best writers she knew and envied your prose.

I particularly enjoyed your latest edition because I returned yesterday from my own sojourn to Costa Rica. Before bed last night I penned some ideas for the Duluth Reader’s next edition. Jana was right.

In between bird watching and lessons on Central American cuisine I kept up with the news and cheered when Magyar defeated the great “contrarian.” You are nothing if not gentle to use such a passive expression to describe a Trump cheerleader and disciplined saboteur of democracy. He only lacked some of his mentor’s shamelessness by accepting the people’s verdict. His reputation may survive because of it. I pray the same will not be said of imitator and mentor.

I suspect that as soon as I push “send” I will recall your name. With that in mind – Enjoy your travels.

Harry Welty

In desperately and unsuccessfully attempting to send this note to Karl’s blog commentary box I found Karl’s name.
it was a small recompense.
