KIRKISM VS THUNBERGISM ON CAMPUS
Campaign update: I made my bed for the first time since I broke my back Sept 14th. After putting five hours into putting up lawnsigns….with great success I might add….I decided that was the least I could do at home. I’m at the typewriter now at 9AM because I’ve finished the news, taken my pain meds, and checked the weather to see when I can return to door to door work. Its so overcast it seems like I’ll be waking up people which is silly because the morning rush hour traffic is long done.
Its hard to predict our October weather but I switched to my tatty Carhart jacket a couple days ago. That was as I knocked on doors of college housing. A couple years ago as Trump seemed to be in eclipse and Greta Thunberg was fighting climate change a measure of liberalism seemed to be ascendent. After the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk with Trump eager to give him the medal of honor the Kirk bros seemed omnipresent. There is a nastiness about young Republicans that is perfectly in tune with “I hate my enemies” Donald Trump. The news yesterday of the vile trash talk of young republicans all over the nation that was recently revealed turned my stomach. I was particularly annoyed that Kansas was one of the epicenters of racist cheap shots.
1488 VP Vance was quick to blame critics for “clutching their pearls.” But the hissy fit throwing crowd had good reason to. The young Kansas republicans were using the number “1488” which is explained in the link above. The 88 stands for the eighth letter of the alphabet doubled HH short for “Heil Hitler”. Vance is free to seig heil that number and while he does I’ll keep clutching my pearls.
100 years ago my Kansas born Grandfather began a life of sticking up for Black Americans. Growing up his neighbor Larry Lapsley was an escaped slave who my grandfather speculated had been castrated by his owners. Later he was a white officer of the 369th infantry in the otherwise all black division called the “Harlem Hellfighters.” They saw more action that any other American Unit in that war. Until recent years when minority soldiers of the Great War were given belated awards that racism stood in the way of my Grandfather, a white man, was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor. I have only contempt for what the Kansas Republican party has permitted to flower in the age of Trump.
I’m sure I’ll have more to say about Charlie Kirk at some point but I’ve wondered how guys on campus who read my flyer are taking it. Its clearly anti-Trump. A couple years ago Greta the Environmentalist was ascendent. I find myself more reluctant to put my signs up in the lawns of college kids for fear they will more quickly disappear than in the past. I’m not eager to climb up my perilous garage rafters to retrieve another batch of lawnsigns. I might fall again.
