I went to one of the best meetings of my life last night. Duluth has three groups affiliating themselves with the movement to prevent Donald Trump and is accessories to murder kill our Democracy. I will shortly begin writing a column about it which I might try to put on Substack as I’m trying to learn how to used this new iteration of information sharing.
I wondered if I might find it crowded and indeed I did. I knew the moment I stepped in that Donald Trump was reaping the wish the God’s gave him when he got elected by waving his middle finger at better than half of America.
In a little group of people I was asked to chat with I told them seeing so many people crawling out of the shadows of the valley of Trump I thought I just might be able to use less corrosive language. Years ago my Dad told me not to swear routinely because there would be times I needed them to hear me and those were the times when cussing would come in handy. For the nine years of Trump cussing seemed very necessary. Not not so much. Trump has made them pay attention to him and cussing from me is now more gratuitous……unnecessary. We have serious things to do, to say and we don’t need to look like we have any derangement syndrom.
I asked for a minute to share a thought with the five hundred folks I would guess crowded the main hall of the Unitarian Universalist Facility…..not sure I am supposed to call it a church. Jen Schultz my Democratic countepart the last two election trying to unseal Trump boil Pete Stauber from Congress explained that while UMD had been planned for our next meeting of Indivisible on the next first Thursday UMD declined. There may have been legitimate timing and logistical reasons for rebuffing a group of citizens defending Democracy from gathering in the non partisan college BUT I SUSPECT IT WAS SIMPLY PURE FEAR OF REPRIASALS BY A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT YANKING LONG STANDING FEDERAL GRANTS AND FUNDING FROM THE HIGHLY SUSPECT SCHOOLS OF HIGHER EDUCATION.
SO……I said I had two things I wanted people to keep in mind before our next gathering. 1st that when I was a kid and my Dad taught at another Minnesota state university, Mankato State, the leader of the American Nazi Party came to speak to the students. I wondered if it wasn’t a little unsettling to know we were being considered a bigger threat than George Lincoln Rockwell’s band of Hitler lovers. The post is about Ann Coulter being kept out of a college but it has a link about my Dad’s irritation when Lincoln Rockwell came into talk to students.
Now onto my column…..
