In the not so long ago days I could put links to newspaper stories behind paywalls.
I read a long story that suggested that the researchers who get the most federal money to study Alzheimers are keeping all the money on losing lines of research with suspect and even fraudulent data. As a son who watched his mother’s long nightmare with the illness I am appalled. I find the link but this is a bit of the story: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/opinion/alzheimers-fraud-cure.html You must subscribe or go to your library to read their copy.
“Decades of complacency by funders, journals and academic institutions that manage the research enterprise means that relatively few cases of such fraud have been caught. For example, few peer reviewers who certify a paper’s scientific quality have the skill to check for image tampering. Despite years of scandals, many journal editors don’t verify images either. And few perpetrators face meaningful consequences.”
