I stand corrected – thank you

Harry,

I logon to your blog from time-to-time and wanted to offer a correction to your most recent entry. Most specifically this line here…

I’ve toyed with the idea of boycotting the Trib but have decided against it because to an old fart like me that would be cutting off my nose to spite my face. I’m a news junky. But the Trib’s local coverage is suffering. Its cast off its expensive senior reporters who know Duluth better than I do. Its replaced them with kids out of college with no taproots into the community.

As a former DNT XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, I thought you should know who really has been cast off. The DNT is a union-run organization meaning those who are laid off are those with the least seniority. I came in XXXXXXXXXXX and trust me when I say this, every senior reporter who was there when I started is still there. Yes, Jane Brissett is gone along with other reporters but all of the senior reporters who contribute on a daily basis continue to work there. It is the young people who are being cast off 95% of the time and that is just because of how the union is setup. I would know because XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. The youngest reporter in the newsroom now has been there for five years while the copy editor with the least seniority has been there for more than 20 years. There isn’t much youth left at that paper and that is a sign of the times and like I mentioned before, the way the union is setup.

Hopefully this clears things up. Thanks.

XXXXXXXXXXXX

I told XXXXXXXXXX that this is just how it works in the Duluth Schools. I should have known this would be true with the Trib as well. Obviously it doesn’t matter how deep your tap roots go if there just aren’t enough reporters to cover all the news that’s fit to print.
