In the Soup

Yesterday was another of those days where it was impossible to keep up with all the posts that seemed important. I had an ongoing family crisis that should have taken up the entire day but I simply had to set it aside except for some emails.

At eleven I hurried over the my monthly, third-friday gig serving (or cooking) food at the Damaino Soup Kitchen. I’ve been doing it since Ronald Reagan was President and America discovered homelessness. There were a lot more fit working aged men in line yesterday – a sign of the times.

Serving with me was my old choir mentor a retired Sixth District Judge. He’s asked me about my struggle with the District over the past couple months and I’ve enjoyed his disapproval of the School Board. Too bad he’s retired.

As I was ladling out pork gravy on noodles he asked me what I made of Dr. Dixon and he didn’t seem to surprised at my assessment. I’m sure the non editorial following his two-hour interview cosseted with his cheering section at the Trib prompted the judge’s inquiry.

Dr. Dixon’s confidence and remorselessness with the truth are breathtaking. I’ve warned some of my supporters not to call Dr. Dixon a liar in letters to the editor. The word is so charged and it could provoke a backlash and simply draw Dr. Dixon sympathy from his loyalists that he does not deserve. Fortunately, he’s pulled out so many whoppers out of the lake that he could be a fisherman.
