Zero Hour appeal from Denfeld High School

An articulate appeal from a member of the Student Government from Denfeld High School…..one of the emails which we, unlike the city, don’t make public.

Hello again!

Yesterday morning I heard an announcement that Exec Board is not going to be zero hour next year. Does that mean that I should assume that your minds are already made up on zero hour? My last email was written in hope that you would think about letting the district keep zero hour and you gave me hope through the few emails I received back. Should I have not gotten hopeful?

Zero hour is a chance for kids to take the extra credits they need to graduate. Zero hour is a chance for busy kids to take the fun classes they can’t fit in to their normal schedules. Zero hour is a chance for kids to get the extra educational supports they need because there aren’t enough hours in the day. These reasons may not seem important to you but they are important to this building.

………………………………………………………………………………I am not the only student concerned. I am just the beginning of unhappy letters and emails that you will be receiving. Please, please understand this.

I know that this is a matter of money and business but that’s not what running a school district should look like. The focus of money should be on keeping classes not taking them away. I know there are other things that can be cut instead. At my school specifically I think there is a lot of food that goes to waste because too much is purchased at once. I think that the amount of money that the new cheerleader assistant coach is going to be paid is way too much. Why aren’t these expenses being cut BEFORE classes? School is about education not money. When did the students of Denfeld high school only become worth the $8000 we each cost?

Please respond back promptly and try to put yourself in the shoes of each student who is loosing a favorite zero hour class. Thank you.

Considering how School Board members may miss their email it might be a better idea for students to send a letter to the Tribune…….not that that necessarily makes much difference either.
