As I noticed last night there are three more letters to the DNT today. In talking to various folks I know that if the School Board made the unlikely decision to let negotiations proceed we could have till the end of April to change our minds on selling Central. I’m glad the public is still inclined to prod us in that direction.
The nub of the first letter:
Regarding the Duluth School Board’s decision not sell the Central High School site so it could be used by Edison Charter School, the word sophomoric comes to mind (“Central High property offer rejected,” April 1). The etymology of that word is instructive. The Greek word sophos is whence the English word sophisticated derives. The Greek word moros is whence the English word moron derives. Hence, to be sophomoric is to be a sophisticated moron…
The nub of the second letter:
I realize the School Board members who voted against this were dug in against Edison; but that ship, folks, has sailed. Whether you or I think Edison is great; Edison is here.
The nub of the third letter:
As a non-parent who strongly supports the need for quality education for the betterment of the community as a whole and as someone who has voted for increased taxes to fund our local district, I see a School Board doing everything possible to squash competition and options for students.
I’m sure the DNT will keep publishing them. They like proof that the community pays attention to the news they report. There is only one way to find out.
