Eh – Happy New Year 2009

The Trib’s Andy Greder and photographer Derek Montgromery dropped by the other day to take a picture. The Eh column summed the subject up just about right.

Who is the Mad Hatter?

Snow sculptor Harry Welty was coy in his explanation of this year’s Alice in Wonderland display in his front yard at 21st Avenue East and Fourth Street. Welty, in his 21st year of sculpting, built a 5-foot-tall Alice, a white rabbit and the Mad Hatter all enjoying a tea party.

The number etched in the Mad Hatter’s hat, however, tells more of the story. The number is 709, the designation of the Duluth school district, which Welty has criticized during the district’s red plan developments.

“I wanted to try something comical, and it’s not a surprise what has been on my mind this year,” Welty said. “For the kids, it will just be Alice in Wonderland,” he added.
