The Trib did a good job reporting our local legislator’s reactions to Mike’s bill a couple days ago.
Mike’s bill might pass with the existing supporters but it would be a slam dunk if two other local legislators joined in. The Trib’s story outlined their current objections.
Senator Prettner Solon is worried that this sets a bad precedent of allowing the state to interfere in local matters. But the state interfered earlier to take away the voting rights of citizens of city’s of the first class. Unlike the citizens of Cloquet, Mankato or Moorhead we have fewer rights in Duluth now to approve school building plans. Why was it OK to take our rights away and not OK to restore our rights?
Representative Tom Huntley simply thinks the Red Plan is a good idea. He is so used to lobbying for UMD buildings that he apparently can’t imagine why anyone would oppose more new and like new schools for Duluth. Also, apparently, if 70 percent of his constituents are unhappy about being denied their right to vote that’s also OK with him.
