Supermen

I can only think of one time that my Dad was cruel. I was reminded of this when the new and well reviewed movie “Hollywoodland” came out. Its about the suicide of George Reeves who was intensely depressed that his two-year portrayal of Superman on the television series had him so typecast that his career all but came to an end. My Dad who found it very ironic that Superman had committed suicide told me but emphasized the irony (which I took to be humor) rather than the pathos of the story.

In a similar way the recent news that Virginia’s Republican Senate candidate, George Allen, was insulted when asked if he had Jewish roots reminded me of another old news item. In the middle of the Civil Rights years a wizard of the Ku Klux Klan committed suicide when the New York Times outed him for being a Jew. Things are not always what they seem.

Like George Allen the rest of the GOP has been exposed repeatedly for not being what its led the public to believe it is.

Its not fiscally conservative. It just expects our children to pay for its spending.

Its leaders, who roil up gay intolerant voters, have no problem employing competant gays in their Capital Hill offices. (although they don’t pay attention to them when they warn of predatory Congressman)

They are the Party of individualism but they all act like sheep when their president declares a dubious war and even when he leaves its management to ninnies and allows it to spin out of control.

Sorry to say it but Superman is dead.
