…Happy Valentines. Apropos the last two posts.
I have nothing so heartwarming to pass on to my potential voters as Jeff and Tarryl do. I’ll tell you my love story since it is apparently necessary for candidates for Congress. (If this opening makes you nervous don’t worry. I told this story to my men’s group at our church)
When I was a hot shot college college student I enrolled in a journalism class that was being taught by a well regarded teacher. I showed up the second day of class having enrolled late. I found the entire class broken up into small groups who were given some task involving tons of research. The leader of the group I joined was the younger sister of a fellow I graduated with from High School. Being a BMOC (Big Man on Campus) I naturally took charge for the day. But after leaving class I realized how much busy work was being asked of us. I never returned to the class.
A week later (not knowing that I had managed to sabotage the little group) I walked into a local bar and saw the pretty former leader of the journalism class group I had messed up. I asked her for a dance and she turned me down. She thought I was an ass and in this case she was quite right. My leaving the group and never showing up without explanation doomed them.
I’ve not asked a lot of girls to dance because of the fear they would turn me down. I’d asked her to dance casually and tried to take her rejection just as casually but I kept my eye on her.
As it happened a fraternity brother of mine was tending bar. Later in the evening I saw Claudia go over to order a drink at the bar. I was heading in the direction of the bar with my eyes glued to Claudia when I saw my buddy reach over the bar to take Claudia’s hand. I found out later he was reaching to look at a ring on her finger or so he later said. Claudia had a powerful distaste for presumptious men. She pulled her hand out of my friend’s grasp so violently that her chair tipped over backward and she fell on the floor. So I picked my wife up at a bar.
Vote for me for Congress.
