Yes by all means we should rename East Duluth’s revamped Middle School after Dr. Keith Dixon…
Also on the list are names that reflect the place; Tischer Creek, Hawthorne, Woodland, Birchen, Birch Hill, Lakeview, Pine View, Horizon, Deerwood, Aerial, Birches, Longview, Ore-Wood, and names that honor people; Greysolon, Snively, Alworth, Sieur du Lhut, Pearson and Dixon (the recently retired superintendent who oversaw much of the long-range facilities plan).
…who has left such a special legacy of educational achievement in Duluth.
Duluth students scored poorly in math compared to the rest of the state, while pulling about even with the state average in reading. Compared to last year, Duluth students increased their math proficiency, while their reading proficiency stayed about the same
The District’s guess as to why our scores fell is it that we’ve suddenly got a lot of new poor kids pulling the scores down:
Duluth school district leaders acknowledged that, overall, students performed poorly in math last year, saying it was probably because of the increasing number of students enrolled in the district who live in poverty.
“Studies have shown us that, historically, they achieve at a lower level,” said Assistant Superintendent Bill Gronseth.
Huh! Did these poor students all enroll last year at the height of the Red Plan induced student exodus?
And apparently no one wants the new Duluth East in their Athletic Conference. How confounding!
Duluth East’s application for membership in the Lake Superior Conference was rejected again Monday at a meeting of conference activities directors.
Last Question – Where’s Jana? Much as I like Brandon Stah’s reporting I sure hope the Trib hasn’t cut its last remaining Education reporter.
