What happened to the Duluth Academy?

A reader with a long memory sent me this old post of mine pooh poohing the dramatic announcement of the City and School District creating a “Duluth Academy.” She asks:

“Sooo, what’s become of the “Duluth Academy?”

It would be interesting to know if our new Superintendent has even heard of it. Perhaps Mayor Ness could fill him in.

My guess is that this hyped news story was yet one more razzle dazzle con perpetrated on the Trib and perhaps the Mayor by Dixon to make it look like he was actually paying attention to teaching and learning.

If so, it reminds me of a story I was told about Dr. Dixon in Faribault when he sweet talked the City Council out of a couple thousand bucks to build an after school center. I’ve forgotten the details and I can’t remember the name of the post I would have written about this but it was something like this: After a long while the City Council began to wonder where all their money had gone to and inquired after it. To their chagrin Dr. Dixon told them he had turned a cafeteria in one of the schools into the facility he’d gotten the money for. The City Council was so embarrassed that their money had disappeared that they dropped the subject.

Let’s hope Mayor Ness only put his name on the District’s press release and not his endorsement one a check written to Dr. Dixon.
