The year after Donald Trump soured women on male candidates I lost a reelection bid for the Duluth School Board. I did several novel things in a desperate bid not to be crushed at the polls. I asked for the DFL Party endorsement although I’d already been edging towards my knock-own-drag-out with the Trumplicans. I also passed out literature like mad. There were many a 30,000 steps per day stretches until my feet gave out with a painful bout of planters-fasciitis.
I had an 18,000 step day recently and yesterday a 17,000 step day in seven straight hours of putting up lawnsigns. The chief difference is that this time I’m knocking on almost every door not just slipping campaign lit in the door. That means lots of conversations and my constant honing of my message. I really enjoy talking to folks even many of the Trumpers who don’t always shut the door on me.
You can see in the title I have two countdowns running. The first is the Aug 13 primary the second is my first major milestone Grandmas marathon when tens of thousands of runners and their friends and family come to Duluth. Two years ago I had just gotten my big lawnsigns and had about two days to put them up. They were the talk of the town but they were such a hassle I never put up more than 20 over Duluth. Now I have the more modest mugshot of me in a vertical sign. Claudia calls it a mugshot and says its obviously a selfie. The later it true. The former…..No only criminals like Trump have mug shot.
I have received a half dozen donations on line and for this weekend I’m putting a add like this in the Duluth Reader and on my lawn.
It is only exhaustion that stands in the way of telling you several charming stories of people who have said very nice things to me as I go door to door.
