Not so special

I happen to like the Duluth’s School District’s Special Ed leadership. Evidently they have been having a hard time of it with all the shuffling.

From the Trib a couple days ago:

Kudos to School Board member Art Johnson for his Sept. 21 commentary, “Dixon, Grover fail schools with their lack of accountability, openness and integrity.” Johnston can attest to problem areas of the School Board; I can attest to those issues and how they affect children, especially those on Individualized Education Plans or IEPs.

Superintendent Keith Dixon stated at the start of his current job that he has a child with special needs and thus special education was his interest. This doesn’t seem true. His main focus seems to be new buildings. Direct-care services for kids on IEPs aren’t being provided and school has started.

There’s no room at Central High School for some special-education staff and/or classrooms. Some students have to go outside and across the parking lot and roadway to get to the secondary center.
