$100,000

Its come down to this. After two years fighting the School Board – three for others – the fight now hinges on raising pledges to cover a $100,000 bond in 29 days. If the taxpayers lose the suit this money will be forfeited to the School District. If we lose.

How much is a hundred grand? Its the cost of a campaign to elect a Mayor of Duluth. That usually takes a year to raise. We’ve got a month.

I’ll risk another $1,000. Now we’re down to $99,000. That was easy. Now I just have to find 99 more people who think our right to vote is important enough to pledge the same – or 198 who would be willing to pledge $500 – or 396 who would pledge $250. Are there such people?

About 2,000 have already contributed $50,000 (or half this amount) to get us where we are today on the verge of a trial that no matter how expedited might get us close to a referendum on an alternative plan. (More on this in the next post) They contributed it when no one thought we could win. That’s an average of $25 per donor. Now its beginning to look like we could win either through a court ruling or because of the delay in construction that our $100,000 bond will make possible.

We have to have the bond by June 30th, about the same time the District plans to gut Ordean. Wouldn’t it be fun if all the recent stories in the Duluth News Tribune about renaming our high schools turned out to be premature?
