Today’s column about the growth of K-12 online education suggests one unhappy consequence for putting all of the Districts eggs into the new school basket. What if in a decade some combination of home schooling private tutoring online education do to public schools what the Internet has done to the nation’s newspapers? Our schools could be the next General Motors.

Virtual public schooling continues to be a growing trend, as more than 1 million American kindergarteners through 12th-grade students receive some or all of their public school education online — a figure that’s growing nearly 25 percent every year.
MTS Minnesota Connections Academy, a free online school that provides personalized K-12 education, began with eight students three years ago. Its current enrollment is more than 800 students.
