Andrew Sullivan calls it his “King George watch.” What he’s watching is the President’s constant usurpation of Congressional and judicial powers. Sullivan speculates that the reason Bush hasn’t bothered vetoing any bills is because he simply administers the law the way he sees fit. The Boston Globe reports that so far Bush has disobeyed 750 laws.
Maybe America needs a Magna Carta. Then again, maybe a good old fashioned impeachment would do the trick. Declaring a war based on questionable intelligence is not a high crime or misdemeanor. Running the war incompetently isn’t one either. Neither is letting your bumbling, bullying, Secretary of Defense take over the portfolio of Secretary of Scapegoat. But ignoring his office’s Constitutional requirement to enforce the laws of Congress……well that may be sufficient grounds. It was enough to impeach Andrew Johnson.
