What does the Bakk bill do?

Yesterday’s story in the Trib has some interesting comments in it by our anti-democratic solons. Yvonne Prettner-Solon and Tom Huntley.

Huntley says the Bakk measure allows the district to spend only half as much as is needed for the Red Plan. He says he’s talked with the Minnesota Dept of Education and that other people don’t know what the Bakk measure will really do. Well, I talked with Tom Melcher of the same Dept of Ed. after sending him the wording of the Bakk provision and he told me clearly that all the Bakk bill does is limit the $171 million in lease levy authority to $125 million. Of the $293 million intended to pay for the Red Plan only $44 million would be chopped off.

Maybe its the Dept of Ed that doesn’t know what the legislation will do. They seem unconcerned about dividing Duluth’s school district into rich and poor, black and white despite Minnesota’s law encouraging integration.

Actually, if the opinion Huntley got from the MDE is right that would make me a very happy camper. Yvonne says it will kill the Red Plan. Oh, that really would make it a bright sunshinin day.
