Civility – and ancient history

During the height of the Red Plan fight some of my allies were perplexed at my divided loyalties. In particular there was my fondness for Mary Cameron. Someday I’ll write about this in more detail. Another old friend I crossed swords with was Bevan Schraw who passed away last year from some dread disease. I once passed out campaign literature for him in the far western district in the thousands in what was then a futile attempt to elect him to the Board.

I’m grateful that I’ve got a long history of writing down my thoughts because when I poke around in the archives I can surprise myself. I just found a long forgotten column from the Duluth Reader. Its about that old war horse “civility” which I sometimes suspect is being paraded around as a weapon to smear the allegedly non civil.

PS. The critic of my column suggested I needed a “shrink.” NO, No, No! I’m not crazy. I’m an idiot. I’m a school board member after all and good ole Mark Twain knew his elected officials. He said, (and I’m quoting him for the millionth time) “First God created the idiot. That was for practice. Then he created school boards.”

Geez, that Twain was an uncivil SOB!
