It turns out that the School District seeks more than a simple variance from the City about putting up signs. To be exact, the appeal is asking that the sign ordinance not apply to the School District’s buildings and wall postings, at all!
If this comes to be, then the coast is clear to put up all sorts of slogans on all the new walls being refurbished or built new on all ISD 709 schools! What will this do for the neighborhoods, in a few years, when some of the buildings become private, or used for other purposes? Its a little expensive to replace cast cement panels to re-write the slogans.
As for that quote from good old Diogenes a friend found a couple more some of which might very well apply to the Duluth Schools under the Dixon/Grover/JCI regime. For myself I rather like number 5:
