Fond Farewell’s- Morgan Park

Today’s paper has a story about the closing of the 99-year old Morgan Park School and today’s open house where alumni and others can get one last look at the school. Aaron Schweiger is hoping to have better luck wooing MP residents than he had with Rockridge’s neighbors. The Open House will be run from 10AM until 3PM.

I started substitute teaching the last year that Morgan Park was a high school and I often subbed for my friend, DFL Senator Sam Solon, while he was in St. Paul legislating. Sam taught social studies there. Later I got a two-year gig teaching at the school where I had Alanna Oswald (Then Rogers) in my class. Before that I had taken my Proctor boys swimming teams to the MP pool for swimming meets. It was brand spanking new in 1976.

My Dad died just after I finished my last year teaching at the school and learned that I wouldn’t be getting tenure. Had these twin blows not occurred I wouldn’t have become a snow sculptor. Life goes on.
