{"id":3794,"date":"2011-07-14T16:02:38","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T21:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lincolndemocrat.com\/?p=3794"},"modified":"2012-02-19T04:55:19","modified_gmt":"2012-02-19T09:55:19","slug":"generic-candidate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lincolndemocrat.com\/?p=3794","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Generic&#8221; Candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My buddy is enjoying the lead that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/148487\/Republican-Candidate-Extends-Lead-Obama.aspx\">generic republican<\/a>&#8221; has over Barack Obama in the Gallup Poll.  Unfortunately Generic is having a hard time organizing a committee, fielding volunteers and raising money. <\/p>\n<p>The leading Republican candidate Mitt Romney raised about $20 million in the last quarter. Over the same period Obama raised more than that from folks who contributed a hundred dollars or less. All told Obama raised better than 4 dollars to every 1 dollar Mitt raised. Obama&#8217;s raised $87 million compared Generic&#8217;s $0 million. maybe if Generic is discovered to have found a cure for homosexuality like Michelle Bachmann&#8217;s husband he&#8217;ll start doing better.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in states like Minnesota and Wisconsin that handed the keys to the Kingdom to the GOP in the last election are suffering a bad case of buyer&#8217;s remorse. Meanwhile these well-to-do states furnish proof to all American voters of the folly of electing politicians who worship at the feet of Grover Norquist and the Tea Party. <\/p>\n<p>The Tea Party has a lot of older folks, older than me, and I&#8217;m 60. Cut off their Social Security and Medicare and let&#8217;s see how close they stick to Mr. Generic.  Especially if the GOP refuses to honor the Nation&#8217;s debts and a fiscal calamity ensues.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a college kid I felt little but disdain for politicians who angled to win elections by trying to force a disaster that voters would blame on the other party.
