The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/09\/30\/business\/fannie-mae-eases-credit-to-aid-mortgage-lending.html\"> seeds were sown in 1999<\/a> at the end of the Clinton years. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/editorial_opinion\/oped\/articles\/2008\/09\/28\/franks_fingerprints_are_all_over_the_financial_fiasco\/\">Barnie Frank was a cheer leader<\/a> for the changes. He&#8217;s in<a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2010\/09\/22\/poll-surprise-of-the-day-barney-frank-in-trouble\/\"> political trouble <\/a>today. Then the Republicans killed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glass%E2%80%93Steagall_Act\">Glass-Steagall<\/a> also in 1999. <\/p>\n<p>This is the concluding paragraph of a premonitory story written in 1999:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980&#8217;s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who is responsible for the mortagage mess?
