Its come down to this. After two years fighting the School Board – three for others – the fight now hinges on raising pledges to cover a $100,000 bond in 29 days. If the taxpayers lose the suit this money will be forfeited to the School District. If we lose.<\/p>\n
How much is a hundred grand? Its the cost of a campaign to elect a Mayor of Duluth. That usually takes a year to raise. We’ve got a month.<\/p>\n
I’ll risk another $1,000. Now we’re down to $99,000. That was easy. Now I just have to find 99 more people who think our right to vote is important enough to pledge the same – or 198 who would be willing to pledge $500 – or 396 who would pledge $250. Are there such people?<\/p>\n
About 2,000 have already contributed $50,000 (or half this amount) to get us where we are today on the verge of a trial that no matter how expedited might get us close to a referendum on an alternative plan. (More on this in the next post) They contributed it when no one thought we could win. That’s an average of $25 per donor. Now its beginning to look like we could win either through a court ruling or because of the delay in construction that our $100,000 bond will make possible.<\/p>\n
