{"id":198,"date":"2006-05-03T13:22:08","date_gmt":"2006-05-03T18:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lincolndemocrat.com\/?p=198"},"modified":"2006-07-19T16:09:28","modified_gmt":"2006-07-19T21:09:28","slug":"breakfast-with-a-convict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lincolndemocrat.com\/?p=198","title":{"rendered":"Breakfast with a convict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowbizz.com\/Diogenes\/NotEudora05\/oberstarslaundry.htm\">I wrote a column<\/a> about an ancient local political scandal involving<\/strong><strong>\u00c2\u00a0Jim Oberstar&#8217;s questionable funding sources for his 1974 campaign. I mentioned Don Boyd,\u00c2\u00a0a fellow\u00c2\u00a0who was accused of, but never found guilty of,\u00c2\u00a0embezzling a million dollars from the government. A few days\u00c2\u00a0after\u00c2\u00a0my column hit the stands\u00c2\u00a0I got an email\u00c2\u00a0from\u00c2\u00a0Don suggesting that we meet over a cup of coffee. He&#8217;d written a book. He did spend time in prison but not for stealing a million bucks. (There&#8217;s always something a fellow can be found guilty\u00c2\u00a0if you&#8217;ve got\u00c2\u00a0the help of a willing perjurer) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sitting in prison and having his\u00c2\u00a0family&#8217;s honor\u00c2\u00a0tarred gave Don a lot to reflect on. If Don was innocent, as I rather suspect he was there could be a good book in it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately,\u00c2\u00a0Don hasn&#8217;t written it. His\u00c2\u00a0head is too full of details and at six or seven hundred pages\u00c2\u00a0no one but a crank like me\u00c2\u00a0would ever\u00c2\u00a0read or publish it.\u00c2\u00a0So I&#8217;ve decided to give him a hand. I&#8217;ll have more to say about this in my next Northland Reader column.
