I learned to today that he sent a letter to the President of the college during World War two encouraging him to accept Nisei students into the college rather than see them interned in Japanese concentration camps.

He had attended the college with Japanese students twenty years before. Take that Trump!

Then I headed to the Kansas City Public Library where I looked up my Dad’s old high school year books. I’ve never seen them. Here’s what my Dad looked like in 1943 – center position bottom row.

He always had big ears.

By coincidence his ROTC class led him to his soon-to-be Father-in-law’s beloved Park College for further training to become a Naval Officer. My Dad was not so impressed with it. All these years later I am rather taken with the college…….Half of it is under a sandstone dome of rock with cool tunnels. Hobbits would love it. Besides that, they dote on my Grandfather’s legacy because he’s one of their distinguished alums. I like basking in his reflection. It makes up for all those times my Mom told me not to cry as a kid because my grandfather was shot in war and he didn’t cry.

Tomorrow I’m off to Topeka, Kansas.

This is the view I had of the Missouri River as I headed into Kansas City MO after spending the morning researching more about…

[47
