The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duluthnewstribune.com\/event\/article\/id\/108564\/\">Eh column <\/a>summed the subject up just about right.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Who is the Mad Hatter?<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.duluthnewstribune.com\/media\/story\/jpg\/2008\/12\/31\/pxeh0101_500px.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.duluthnewstribune.com\/media\/story\/jpg\/2008\/12\/31\/pxeh0101_500px.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Snow sculptor Harry Welty was coy in his explanation of this year&#8217;s Alice in Wonderland display in his front yard at 21st Avenue East and Fourth Street. Welty, in his 21st year of sculpting, built a 5-foot-tall Alice, a white rabbit and the Mad Hatter all enjoying a tea party. <\/p>\n<p>The number etched in the Mad Hatter&#8217;s hat, however, tells more of the story. The number is 709, the designation of the Duluth school district, which Welty has criticized during the district&#8217;s red plan developments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to try something comical, and it&#8217;s not a surprise what has been on my mind this year,&#8221; Welty said. &#8220;For the kids, it will just be Alice in Wonderland,&#8221; he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Trib&#8217;s Andy Greder and photographer Derek Montgromery dropped by the other day to take a picture.
